Review of the Ghosts, Ghouls and Gallows Tour: Guided Tour with Boat Ride in London, England with Viator | Top Travel Tips for London, England

October 6, 2025

When I was planning our trip to London this year, I didn’t want to do all of the same old tours and sightseeing as I did on my last visit when I was 16. I had already done all of the standard London-y things like a ride on the London Eye, a walk around Westminster Abbey, a visit to Buckingham Palace, and a theatre show in the West End. This time, 20 years later, I was traveling with my husband, Chris, who had never been to London. I didn’t need a repeat of the same trip I took when I was 16, so I scoured the internet for unique tours and experiences, and was so excited when I saw the Ghosts, Ghouls and Gallows Tour with a guided boat ride with Viator. It was a great way to see of the sites, squeeze in a boat ride, and hear a few spooky ghost stories about the history of London. It was the perfect tour for us. We love taking ghost tours in new cities and I had no doubt that a London ghost tour would be particularly haunting and intriguing. We’ve been on quite a few ghost tours in places like Savannah, Georgia, Williamsburg, Virginia and my hometown, Richmond, Virginia. We have one planned in Louisville, Kentucky in the fall that I’m really excited about too.

I have to say, this was probably one of my favorite ghost tours I’ve ever been on. There was so much included for the price, and the stories were incredibly spooky and interesting. Sometimes, I’ll zone out on tours if the guide isn’t very engaging or if the stories are too historical and informative. But our tour guide was great at blending history with theatrics, and the stories were honestly a bit scarier than I even expected! I probably wouldn’t take children on this tour because the stories were quite gory and descriptive at times, but as an adult, it was a blast. I always find ghost tours to be more fun when there are lots of people in the group, and this tour had probably around 30 people on it, which was perfect. It seems to help bring the stories to life a bit more when the group is larger and more interactive. I’ve been on a few ghost tours with only 5 or 6 people in the group and it’s just not the same!

Our tour started out with a stunning walk through the park near Buckingham Palace. Chris and I actually picked up the most delicious panini-like sandwiches from a bakery called Chestnut Bakery Picadilly, right near the meeting point. The sun was starting to set as we walked along a beautiful bridge and caught a glimpse of the London Eye. Our guide told us a few stories along the way and then led us through the city streets a bit to catch glimpses of a few famous London landmarks. We truly experienced the most incredible sunset on our walk, and the sun was reflecting off of Big Ben and Westminster Abbey and we got the most amazing photos! Honestly, if you were in London for only one day, this tour is the perfect way to see all of the iconic London sites without having to search it all out on your own.

As we headed closer to the Thames River, we’d stop every once in a while for our guide to elaborate on the stories. The walk was leisurely and allowed for time for photos in front of the sites too. When we made it to the boat, the guide handed us a ticket and we all hopped on board. I couldn’t stop taking photos because the city skyline just looked so picturesque. I definitely recommend taking the tour because watching the sun set over the Thames was magical.

There were drinks available on board and we scoped out a spot on the back of the boat for views of Big Ben and Westminster Abbey as the boat tutted up the river towards the Tower Bridge.

As the night went on, the stories got spookier. Especially when we got to the historic Tower Bridge and eventually the Tower of London. If you know anything at all about London, you know their were lots of beheadings, power struggles, rumors, and scandals about the Romans and the royal families that have filtered through over the last 2000 years. My husband particularly enjoyed the historical aspect of the stories, while I enjoyed the gorgeous views and exciting drama of the potential ghosts that haunt the city.

SO, WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS TOUR?

Yes, 1000%! I’d probably rate this ghost tour a 9/10. I’m not sure how it could be any better! I don’t want to give away too much by sharing every tiny bit of excitement during the tour, but I will say this; the Ghosts, Ghouls, and Gallows tour is a perfect way to experience the darker side of London and learn quite a bit of history along the way. I was pleasantly surprised by how the tour really covered just about everything in London that you need to see as a visitor. And I recommend arriving early to the tour before it starts and strolling around The Green Park nearby beforehand. It’s a great time to visit Buckingham Palace too, because the Palace is a bit out of the way from some of the other sites, so you can check it off your list while you’re over there. So, head to the area an hour or two early to make the best use of your time while in London. And make sure to stop by a historical British pub on your way home after the tour. Our tour guide recommended a few in the area and we popped in for a quick beer on the way back to our hotel. It felt like a full London experience in only a few hours, which is exactly what I was looking for. Plus, it was super memorable, we took amazing photos, and I felt like it really was a great way to make my second visit to London not feel too repetitive.

We also went on the Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour while we were in London too, and that was absolutely INCREDIBLE. It was one of the highlights of our trip, for sure. Even if you’re not a major Harry Potter fan, it’s a great tour that really takes you behind the scenes of moviemaking. We were incredibly impressed by that tour. I’d even go on that one again next time I’m in London! You can read more about it on my blog here!

I hope this helped you kick off your London itinerary! If you’d like to book this exact tour, you can find it here or check out all of my recommended tours on my Viator shop page! If you’re planning on booking this for a large group, I’d make sure to book decently far in advance just to make sure it doesn’t sell out. If you’d like to read more about my travels, check out my travel blog, C’est Le Brie, that I run with my sister! And if you’re looking for more tips while planning your trip, I’ve included a few hotel, restaurant, and museum recommendations below. :)

Review of the Complete Douro Valley Wine Tour with Lunch, Wine Tastings and River Cruise with Viator | Porto, Portugal Travel Tips

August 27, 2025

When I was planning our trip to Portugal, I knew I’d want to spend a day at the vineyards in the Douro Valley drinking port wine. I just wasn’t sure how we were going to get there from the city of Porto! I stumbled across the Complete Douro Valley Wine Tour with Lunch, Wine Tastings and River Cruise by Viator and after reading a few of the reviews, it sounded perfect. A guided bus tour, two vineyard tours and tastings AND a boat ride through the Douro Valley. It sounded too good to be true! I’ve taken many bus tours in my time and I’m always a little hesitant because I tend to get carsick rather easily. I’ve survived tours on St. Lucia’s twisty mountain roads, Maui’s Road to Hana and the treacherous cliffs along the Amalfi Coast so I tried to remind myself that it couldn’t possibly be worse than those. Luckily, it wasn’t bad AT ALL and I would say it was one of my favorite all-day bus tours I’ve been on so far! We saw stunning views from the bus and it was a nice peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of Porto.

Casa dos Barros Wine Cellar

We visited Casa dos Barros winery first. There was a beautiful terrace with ivy-covered walls, with peacocks and cats roaming the property. We ate lunch inside a lovely dining room and enjoyed a three-course meal and lots of wine. Honestly, for the price of this Viator tour, I honestly can’t believe everything that’s included! Then we hopped on a traditional rabelo boat for a peaceful ride on the Douro River, and then ended the day at Croft Port, one of the oldest port wine producers in the world. Croft was probably the most beautiful vineyard I’ve ever seen in my life. It was incredible. I still think about this vineyard all the time, because it truly was straight out of a dream. My husband and I were the last ones on the bus because we truly didn’t want to leave!

I posted a full video on my YouTube channel about our tour so you can decide for yourself if it’s something you’d want to go on! I’d highly recommend it though because the views were gorgeous, the port wine was delicious, and it was totally worth the price. It’s only about $100/person which is crazy to me. We had an incredible tour guide, Margarida, and the vineyards we visited were absolutely stunning. I’d even take this tour again if we went back. I loved it so much. It also helped that the weather was perfect, despite a little rain earlier in the day. We were even given two glasses of wine each with our lunch too, which was included with the cost, along with all of the entrance fees, the boat ride, and the tastings!

It was so nice to be able to relax for the day, instead of staring at the maps on my phone trying to find a restaurant or figure out how to get back to our hotel. I’m always the trip planner when it comes to me and Chris, mostly because I’m type A and need to be in control of everything. :) Plus, I like to save money where I can, so the fact that this tour was so affordable made it even better.

If you’re looking for an affordable hotel in Porto, I’d highly recommend Memoria Porto FLH Hotels. It was quiet, affordable, beautiful, close to the water, super clean, and we were even greeted with port wine upon our arrival! You can read more about my Portugal hotel recommendations on my travel blog - Cute & Affordable Hotels in Porto & Lisbon.

If you’re heading to Portugal anytime soon, you absolutely need to visit both Porto and Lisbon. And while you’re in Porto, make sure to book this Douro Valley tour. You won’t regret it. It would even be great for a larger group because it takes all of the guesswork out of traveling. I would have loved for my parents and siblings to have joined us for the tour. Maybe next time! There were people of all ages on this tour and I always love getting to know other travelers from all over the world.

If you’d like even more details about this specific tour, you can find it on my travel blog here! And make sure to check out my Viator shop to see all of our favorite tours around the world so far! And you can watch more videos from our trip to Portugal on my YouTube channel.

Have a magical day!

The Cotswold Way in 10 Days : Hiking and Hotel Guide FREE DOWNLOAD

August 27, 2025

If you’re in the midst of planning your trip to England to hike the Cotswold Way National Trail, I’m here to help! My husband, Chris, and I completed the trail this past May and we wanted to share everything we learned along the way. In some ways, it was harder than we envisioned, and in other ways it was much easier! There’s a lot to think about; from booking your hotels to buying hiking gear to finding food along the way. I’m currently offering a free download of my travel guide, the Cotswold Way in 10 Days so make sure to download it while you can!

This guide includes hotel recommendations, restaurant and food options, gear recommendations, and of course, a few photos from our hike! It also includes recommendations for London, in case you’re heading there first before you start your hike. Oh, and of course there are tips for traveling from London to the starting point of the trail, Chipping Campden. I was definitely nervous about that aspect, wondering if I’d even be able to find the starting point! Don’t worry though, it’s not as bad as you might think!

If you’re not planning on hiking the whole trail, I highly recommend a day tour like this one from London to the Cotswolds, or doing a walking tour with a guide, which you can find here.

I hope this guide helps you with your planning! I just remember how entirely overwhelmed I felt when I first started booking my trip. There’s a LOT to think about, especially if you’re not a seasoned hiker. But the Cotswold Way is a perfect place to start, because it really does offer a lot of amenities that typical long distance hiking does not, such as hotels and bag transport. You can read all about it in the guide below. Happy travels!
