Shooting Kodak Ektar 100 with a Holga GCFN in Portugal!

I’ve been forcing myself to step outside my box and try out some new film stocks lately. I tend to stick with Lomography film or Kodak Portra 400 and Kodak Gold 200, but Kodak Ektar 100 is one of those films I always hear about but just never got around to trying. I decided to take a roll with me to Portugal and test it with my Holga GCFN. After getting my film back and scanning it, I’ve definitely learned a few things about it. It has an overall blue undertone, that particularly shows up if you’re shooting in lower light (like a cloudy day or shadowed setting). It definitely favors bright lighting and sunshine. The next time I shoot with it, I’ll be sure to take it with me to the beach on a sunny day. However, the blue undertones add a nice moodiness that is unlike any other film I’ve shot with. It has a dreary graininess that is endearing and calming in a way. In general though, it’s a good rule of thumb to shoot in bright light with any film under 200 ISO. Sometimes, I forget what kind of film I put in my Holga so I end up being surprised by the results. Next time I load my Holga, I’m planning to tape a piece of paper on the back of my camera with the film stock I put inside just so I don’t forget!

Psychedelic Blues 35 mm Film #2 and #4 Sample Photos with a Nikon FE2 Camera

This time of year is always so chaotic and crazy, but it’s also a nice time to experiment with different films and cameras just for fun! Work is finally slowing down for the year and I can take a break from lugging my giant camera backpack around with me. I can’t help myself though, I always bring at least one camera with me everywhere I go, even if it’s just a day of Christmas shopping or a cold, wintry walk through the woods. The Nikon FE2 is one of my favorite cameras (which you probably already know if you’ve been following me for a while - you can read my full review of the Nikon FE2 on my blog here!) so I decided to try out a roll of Psychedelic Blues 35 mm film with it. Psychedelic Blues film is an experimental pre-exposed film stock and each roll is entirely unique. While there are a few different options to choose from stylistically, you’ll never get the same roll twice. Personally, I love experimenting with strange film stocks. I get bored so easily by the standard film rolls, but I’m often too nervous to use these kinds of film rolls for my photography clients, just in case they turn out a little “too” weird. Though I always appreciate the clients that ask specifically for these kinds of images! I absolutely love how these photographs turned out and I can’t wait to try out another roll sometime soon. I used Psychedelic Blues #2 and #4 for these images, but I love all of the ones I’ve tried so far. I think my favorite might be Psychedelic Blues #6, but that one can be difficult to get your hands on!

Sneak Peek of Finn & Joe's Woodland Gothic Wedding at the Poe Museum | Richmond, Virginia Wedding Photography

I love my clients so much. Throughout the course of my 12 years as a wedding photographer, I’ve discovered that it’s actually better to not advertise too much for my business because when my clients find my work, it means they were truly looking for it. It means something about my work stuck out to them, and they weren’t willing to settle for a photographer just because they were on the first page of google.

I’m particularly excited to share these images from Finn & Joe’s woodland gothic wedding at the Poe Museum because their whole vibe was just so on point. From the styling to the flowers (Arcane Arrangements killed it!) to the venue, it all matched up so perfectly. I’m absolutely obsessed with these photos. I might go so far as to say it might be one of my favorite weddings I’ve ever photographed! They were just so kind and sweet too, which makes the whole experience even more memorable.

The Poe Museum is such a special place. It’s a tiny, quirky museum located in downtown Richmond. Whenever a visitor asks me what I recommend to do in Richmond, I always tell them to stop by the Poe Museum. It has a stunning courtyard, a super cute gift shop, and a black cat that wanders the property. It’s quite small so it’s not too overwhelming to visit, and it’s just a beautifully historic and unique experience.

Here is a sneak peek from their wedding day! As usual, I shot a combination of film and digital.
