15 Best Digital Cameras for Beginner Photographers under $1500 | Top Entry-level Cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm & More!

I get asked this question a LOT, and I totally get it. Most people aren’t interested in a super professional camera that costs an arm and a leg. They want a camera that they can use to capture their family vacations, their kid’s sports games, or their family get-togethers. But they also want beautiful photographs that are worthy of hanging on the wall. Yes, cell phones these days can take decently good photos, but they aren’t super great for blowing up larger and spending money on a frame. If you’re ready for an upgrade from your iPhone, this list is for you!

I included a blend of point-and-shoot cameras, DSLRs, and mirrorless cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm & others. And if you’re over the big brands, I’ve included a few from Panasonic, OM System, Ricoh, and Leica. So, depending on which brand or style you prefer, hopefully this list will help guide you in the right direction. All of these cameras offer a lot for the price and tend to lean towards the more professional side of photography. But, just because they are more “professional”, doesn’t mean they aren’t approachable. There are cameras on this list that you can get as low as $400 if you’re open to buying a used camera. Buying used gear doesn’t mean you can’t get a camera in incredible condition. I always recommend buying used gear through KEH Camera or B&H Photo because they have a detailed rating system and are honest about the condition of the gear. Plus, they both have excellent customer service if you have any issues along the way. And just remember, your iPhone probably cost $1000-$1500, and with these cameras, you’re getting a LOT more bang for your buck in terms of photo quality and functionality. Plus, if you want to hang one in a photography gallery, you can do that too! :)

So, without further ado, here are the 15 Best Digital Cameras for Beginner Photographers Under $1500!

1. Canon 6D or 6D Mark II - DSLR

I have to start off with a Canon camera because this is my tried and true brand. I’ve been shooting with Canon since the very beginning of my photography career. At times, I’ve considered entirely switching my set-up to another brand just to try something different, but after weighing all of my options, it always comes back to Canon. It’s because they offer the best budget to quality ratio, in my opinion. There are also certain features that I’m looking for in my main cameras, like multiple exposures, affordability, and color tone. There’s something about Canon’s standard color temperature that looks natural, but with a hint of mystery. The colors are a bit darker than some of the other cameras, which is why it appeals to me. If you’re more interested in bright, saturated color tones, I’d probably recommend a Sony option. Now, keep in mind the Canon 6D or 6D Mark II is a DSLR. This means it’s quite a bit bulkier than a point-and-shoot, and you have to buy a separate lens. But, there are a handful of lenses out there that are quite small and can actually make this camera pretty easy to walk around with. I recommend the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.4 or f/1.8. The Canon 6D was my main camera for nearly a decade. I feel like this might surprise people because it is a more low-budget professional Canon camera. The more recent version of the camera, the 6D Mark II, sells for around $1200 but the reason it’s on this list is because you can get a gently used one for an amazing price these days. I highly recommend KEH camera, which is a company that sells used gear and is super helpful if there is ever a problem. You can also pick up a used version on eBay, just make sure you’re going through a reputable seller with good reviews, and read their description carefully. And ask the most important question, what is the shutter count on the camera? This can tell you a lot about whether the camera was used or if it’s in practically new condition.

You can read my full blog post and review about the Canon 6D here!

2. Canon Powershot G7X Mark II - Point-and-shoot

Yes, this camera is difficult to get your hands on these days, and usually it’s at an up charge. But keep your eyes open for a used one on KEH camera, because this tiny little point-and-shoot packs a punch. I’ve actually taken it on my last two European vacations, instead of my bulky DSLR camera. You can check out my full blog post about this camera here! And surprisingly, the auto setting works really well, particularly for landscapes or outdoor photos. If you’re using it for indoor sports or something like that, I’d recommend using the shutter priority setting. Basically, you set the shutter speed, which you’d want to be fairly fast (like 1/500th or 1/800th) so that you don’t get too much blur, and then it will automatically set the other settings. The amazing thing about this camera is that the aperture goes as wide as f/1.8. This means it can perform great in low light and can create beautiful portraits with lovely background blur. It might take some learning when it comes to using that setting, because it can become more difficult to get your subject in focus, or to not have the highlights blown out. It’s a great camera to learn on though, because it does have the option of shutter priority, aperture priority, manual and lots of others! A lot of times, people ask me what to get instead of the Canon G7X Mark II, since it’s difficult to find. I’d recommend the Sony RX 100 VII (read more about this one below), or the ZV-1, ZV-1 II or ZV-1F for lower budget options.

3. Canon EOS RP - Mirrorless

The Canon EOS RP is a newer budget professional Canon camera, so it offers some more trendy features than the older Canon 6D Mark II. But keep in mind, when the Canon 6D Mark II first came out, it was a $2000 camera, whereas the Canon EOS RP was originally $1299. Now, you can get the Canon EOS RP for around $800, which is an amazing price for what you get. The EOS RP is a mirrorless camera, which is a more modern kind of camera than a DSLR. It also means you have to use Canon’s RF line of lenses. They are the newest line of lenses and are known to be a bit sharper than the older EF lenses. Also, because this camera is newer, it also offers better video than the Canon 6D Mark II, but it actually has the same sensor and ISO range (low-light sensitivity)! However, the 6D Mark II offers better battery life, build quality, burst shooting (important for sports action), and EF lens compatibility. These options are important for event photographers and wildlife photographers, who need longer battery life and build quality that will withstand more extreme conditions. If you’re looking for a step up from the RP, I highly recommend the Canon R8. It’s about $1400 new but it has more modern features and really competes with some of the best mirrorless cameras out there.

4. Canon 5D Mark IV - DSLR

This is actually my current camera, and I truly can’t believe that price you can get for a used version of this camera through KEH camera. A new 5D Mark IV costs around $2200 these days, but when it was first released, it was $3500!!! The reason these have drastically reduced in price is because of the introduction of the mirrorless cameras. Personally, I still prefer the DSLRs because I find them to be sturdier, more user-friendly and longer-lasting. My had my first Canon camera, the 5D Mark II, for 10 years and I never had an issue with it. And I definitely dropped it more times than I could count. They are truly built to last. The mirrorless cameras often have more breakable screens, more electronic functions that can glitch out more easily, and just aren’t as tried and true. I suppose we’ll find out if they stand the test of time, but you’re more likely to get a camera without issues by going with a DSLR, even if it’s used. I have the Canon EOS R, Canon’s first mirrorless camera, and I've had a ton of issues with it, mostly just functionality issues that they’ve adjusted since then, but I tend to recommend DSLR’s over mirrorless still to this day. If you can get a used 5D Mark IV for a good price, you’re competing with some incredible photographers that also use this as their main camera!

I have a full blog post and review with sample photos of the 5D Mark IV here!

5. Nikon Z5 - Mirrorless

The Nikon Z5 is Nikon’s entry-level mirrorless camera, so if you’d prefer to go with a more modern camera than the old-school DSLR’s and Nikon is your brand, this is a great option. The Z5 is about $1100 new, but again, you can get a used one for an amazing price through KEH camera. The Z5 is super compact too, so if you don’t want to stand out too much when you’re on vacation or at your kid’s sports game, this is a perfect option. You’ll still get 4K video, a surprisingly good ISO range, and great autofocus. The standout features are really the in-body image stabilization, dual card slots, and lightweight body. While I don’t have as much experience with Nikon, they are Canon’s main arch nemesis, and have always stood the test of time. I have a 35 mm Nikon film camera, the Nikon FE2, that I’m absolutely obsessed with. They have great lens options and simply won’t let you down.

6. Nikon D750 - DSLR

For years, this was the camera that I swear every photographer was using. It’s a DSLR similar to the Canon 5D Mark III or 6D that is sturdy, professional and reliable. Since Nikon is also shifting towards mirrorless cameras, you can get the D750 for an incredible price. Originally $2300, you can now pick up a new one for around $1700. But the reason I put it on this list is because you can get one in excellent condition from KEH camera for as low as $700. I feel like used gear always freaks people out, but that’s why I recommend KEH camera or B&H Photo for used gear. The employees know a LOT about cameras and photography and can totally help you out if there’s ever an issue.

7. Sony A7 II or III - Mirrorless

The Sony A7 III is an extremely popular camera these days because it has amazing video, image quality, autofocus, battery life, dual card slots, a compact body and in-body image stabilization. A lot of people might argue it’s the best all-around camera out there these days. The great thing is, it’s only $1500 new! While that does not include a lens, you can go for a kit that includes a lens, which usually saves you a bit of money in the long run. Again, that’s why I’d check out the used options on KEH or B&H if you want the best deal. I promise you, you don’t need to be afraid of used gear! I just recommend always getting one in excellent or excellent+ condition. You basically want it to be in as new of condition as possible. The lower price point ones in “good” condition might seem appealing, but you just never know the history of the camera.

8. Sony A6700 - Mirrorless

The Sony a6700 has been on my list for a while now because it’s super compact, has amazing video, and has an excellent autofocus system. Sony has really been carving their own path in the camera industry and in my opinion, is very much challenging Canon and Nikon. I’m not mad about it though because it has made Canon and Nikon really amp up their gear and keep it relevant. I feel like they both were coasting for a while as the two main camera brands, but now they finally have some competition. The a6700 is particularly great if you’re trying to capture motion or sports, and if video is more important to you than photos. If you’re starting a YouTube channel, or are interested in capturing slo-mo, the a6700 is for you.

9. Sony RX100 VII - Point-and-shoot

If I could choose any camera off this list that I don’t already have, it would be this one. The only reason I haven’t really invested in Sony is because their cameras don’t offer multiple exposure. To most people, this feature isn’t important, so if you’re really looking for a super relevent, modern, point-and-shoot camera, this is the one. It’s $1700 new, but a used version goes for around $1500. And what’s nice about this one is that you don’t have to worry about buying a separate lens! It’s a point-and-shoot, so the lens is part of the camera and can’t be removed. You just point, and shoot! It’s perfect for family vacations, being inconspicuous at a sports event, throwing in your bag for a simple outing, or capturing beautiful group portraits at family events. It’s similar to the Canon G7X Mark II in a lot of ways, but better for capturing motion, better battery life, and an even smaller body. It’s a great option if you’re having a hard time finding a G7X Mark II.

10. Fujifilm X-S20 - Mirrorless

I always describe Fujifilm cameras as a great option for the photographer who craves creative control, unique images, and a break from the norm. Fujifilm is really known for their film cameras, which is why their digital cameras are so fun. The often have fun film-simulation modes built-in, which allows you to create images that are film-like and that stand out from the traditional digital look that you find with all of the other cameras on this list. And the Fujifilm X-S20 actually has incredible video, a compact body, and lots of other great features that particularly are great for vloggers or YouTubers.

11. Fujifilm X100V - Point-and-shoot / Rangefinder

The X100V is the sort of the point-and-shoot Fujifilm option with a fixed lens and super compact body. If you like the idea of the film simulation modes and a built-in fixed lens, then this might be a better option. The Fujifilm X100V is beloved in the film community for a lot of reasons, such as the retro-style camera body, the beautiful 23mm f/2 fixed lens and 4K video. While the X-S20 has better video, it’s not as compact or “pretty” to look at. The X-S20 is a DSLR, while this is more like a portable point-and-shoot. It’s just a fun camera to carry around and it makes you excited to take photographs. It doesn’t feel embarrassingly large or “serious”. It’s quirky and special! Because these are highly coveted, it can be difficult to get your hands on one, but KEH camera sometimes has a bargain option for around $1500. I recommend keeping your eye out and waiting for a good deal because it’s really just a classic camera to have in your collection.

12. Panasonic LUMIX LX100 II - Point-and-shoot / Mirrorless

The Panasonic LX100 II is actually pretty similar to the camera I just mentioned, the Fujifilm X100V. It’s a compact camera with a fixed lens but for a lower price. It might not be as highly sought after, but it offers a lot of the same features. The main differences are that the Panasonic LX100 II actually has a bit of zoom to the lens, which is better for travel or capturing sports. It also has better image stabilization and a smaller, lighter body. The main positive attribute of this camera is the price. You can get a used one for around $1200 (if you can find one…)! And don’t forget, this includes the lens since it’s built in! Not to mention, it’s a Leica lens, which are known for being ultra sharp. With only 17 megapixel images, the the image quality overall isn’t quite as good as a lot of cameras on this list, but the price is less stressful than investing in a full DSLR and lens set-up or an overpriced point-and-shoot like the Canon G7X Mark II. The lens is a f/1.7 to f/2.8 aperture though, which does increase the capabilities of the camera in low light.

13. Panasonic LUMIX S5 - Mirrorless

The Panasonic LUMIX S5 is a full-frame mirrorless camera that fits in more with the Canon EOS RP or Nikon Z5. This means it’s a bit bulkier, requires a separate lens purchase, and is geared more towards professional photographers. It’s on the higher end of the pricepoint spectrum, but still fits on this list if you buy it used! It’s a full-frame mirrorless camera with 4K video capabilites, in-body image stabilization, and a rugged, sturdy body. This is a pro level hybrid camera, so its great for both photo and video. It really has all of the features you need to start a photography or video career if you’re really serious about investing in your future. It’s honestly a great price for what you get and is actually lighter and smaller than most full-frame DSLRs!

14. OM System OM-5 - Mirrorless

I’ve recently been doing a lot more research into the OM system cameras after my visit to the B&H Bild Expo in New York City. I was chatting with one of the associates in the OM booth and learned a lot about their brand. The OM System cameras are particularly amazing for travel because of their super durable weather-sealed design. The autofocus is great and the burst shooting goes up to 30 fps, which is incredible for nature photography and capturing things like fluttering birds wings. I’d definitely recommend this camera particularly to hikers, nature photographers and travel photographers because it has a lot of other features like a Starry Sky autofocus mode and built-in neutral density filters to help capture things like waterfalls and waves. It also has an interesting “hand-held high-res shot” that allows for images up to 50 megapixels by combining multiple shots into one.

15. Ricoh GR III - Point-and-shoot

This one can be a bit difficult to find as well, similar to the other point-and-shoot cameras on this list. But Ricoh is a brand I’ve been getting into lately, especially with their film cameras. The Ricoh GR III is a premium point-and-shoot camera that is compact and travel-friendly, with great image stabilization and low-light performance. What makes it really stand out though is the image quality and sharpness. As a Japanese company, their attention to optics is pretty unmatched. They’ve always been known for their sharp lenses and durable camera bodies. While they don’t release as many cameras as Canon or Sony, they pay attention to detail and create cameras that are worth the wait.

16. Leica D-Lux 7 - Point-and-shoot

Point-and-shoot cameras are incredibly popular these days so I wanted to include one more that stands out to me. While the Leica D-Lux 7 has to be purchased used to fit in the $1500 price point, it does include the lens since it’s a point-and-shoot! Leica cameras in general are beautiful and stylish, with that retro old-school film camera look. While I have yet to own one because they tend to be overpriced for the specs that you get, this one is somewhat affordable and keeps up with the others in this price point. Their lenses are known for being super sharp and are made with premium materials since they are somewhat considered a “luxury” brand. If you really want a camera that feels special and great in your hands, the Leica cameras are truly beautiful. Also, if you’re looking for a gift for a photographer, no one is going to turn down a Leica!

2025 Gift Guide for Photographers | The 20 Best Gift Ideas for the Artist in Your Life

(By using the affiliate links and/or codes in this blog post it supports Myles Katherine Photography. We may get a small kick back by you doing so.)

It’s Gift Guide time! I truly don’t understand how it’s already December… this year has been a blur of travel, work, blogging, YouTube videos, and now, a new little puppy! We just picked up our new girlie a few days ago. Our lives have been flipped upside down but she’s already starting to feel like a part of the family. All of this to say, it’s taken me a bit longer than expected to put this Gift Guide together. :)

If you’re looking for something for the photographer, videographer, or artist in your life, I hope this guide helps to give you a few ideas!

1. HOLGA GCFN OR DIANA F+

It’s no secret that the Holga is my favorite camera in the world. I still remember my very first roll of film I ever took and how enamored I was with the photos. There is something so magical about it’s unpredictability. I have a full blog post and YouTube video about the Holga too, in case you’re interested in finding out more about it! The Diana F+ is very similar to the Holga and also falls into the “toy camera” category. I find the Diana F+ to be a bit more tricky to use, but the images also have that vignetting and surreal quality that toy cameras are known for. A Holga or Diana F+ is a great gift for photographers of any level because when it really comes down to it, they’re super easy to use. There aren’t a whole lot of settings to learn or deep knowledge of aperture and shutter speed. The trickiest part is understanding the quirks of toy cameras, but that’s part of the fun of these cameras; learning as you go. Not to mention, they look super cute on a shelf! I prefer the GCFN model, which has a glass lens and a flash. The Holga typically can be found in black, but you can find lots of other fun colors on eBay! Every photographer I know loves the Holga once they try it out. Personally, the Holga is what made me fall in love in photography and I never leave home without it!

2. SQUARESPACE OR SMUGMUG SUBSCRIPTION

There’s really nothing more important for a photographer to have than a website. For someone who is just starting out, a website can be an expensive and confusing investment. I use Squarespace and I absolutely love it. The templates are incredibly easy to use and understand. You don’t need to be a website designer to have an amazing website. I’ve tried out a few other options like Wordpress and Wix, but I find that you need a much deeper understanding of web design and code to really make a great site. I actually have 3 Squarespace websites that I run now because I love it so much!

For photo storage for my clients, I use Smugmug. I’ve been using it for years and years, mostly for wedding photography but also for my own personal photo storage. I have the Portfolio plan so it comes with unlimited storage and I just upload my photo sets directly from Lightroom. I even have my phone set to auto-upload so it’s basically like cloud storage, but better. The app is great too because I can download any photo at any time for posting to social media. It’s also SO incredibly important to have some sort of online storage in case something happens to your physical hard drives. I always make sure to backup my photos in multiple places, but I feel so much better once I upload them to Smugmug because I know my photos won’t disappear if my house burns down. Terrifying to think about, but I can’t imagine if something happened to all of my photos!

3. ETSY PRINTS AND PRODUCTS

If you’re thinking of buying something arts-supportive for your creative friend or family member, Etsy is filled with small businesses, artists, and creators. There are so many different product options: artwork, handmade jewelry, vintage collectibles, cute knitted creatures, photography, keepsakes, etc. It’s a great way to support other artists and small businesses too. I’ve been using Etsy forever and my family and I love to gift each other things from the site. You can check out my Etsy shop here, or you can browse designs by hundreds of thousands of other artists. It’s so much better than buying some random framed art print or coffee mug from Walmart or some other major retailer because on Etsy you’re supporting super small, unknown artists who deserve the recognition and truly appreciate the sale and support!

4. UNIQUE FILM STOCK

There’s nothing more exciting to me than trying out a new film stock. There are so many different options out there and really, you can’t go wrong. Film typically comes in two options, 35 mm or 120 (also called medium format). There are other sizes of film too, but these are the main options. Just make sure you’re buying the right one for the camera! Personally, I love Lomography and all of their strange and unique film stocks like LomoChrome Purple and LomoChrome Turquoise, but I also love their standard color film stock too. Kodak is probably the most common and most consistent film brand, and Kodak Gold 200 is a great one for beginners and has a gorgeous warm tone to it. I find Fujilfilm 35 mm film to have a classic greenish tint to it that reminds me of the 90s, which is super fun too. And if you really want to impress your photographer friend, buy them Portra 160, Portra 400, or Portra 800. This film is the best of the best, but it’s pricey, so a photographer will always appreciate if you buy it for them! You can also check out my blog post about Unique Film Stocks for 35 mm Cameras here or my Top 5 Favorite Color Films for 35 mm Cameras here. Sometimes, I just browse Amazon and pick up one I’ve never seen before, but if you’re not quite there yet or want some guidance, here are a few 35 mm film stocks I’d recommend.

5. CUTE CAMERA BAG

I’m actually getting a new vegan leather camera bag this year for Christmas and I cannot wait. My old camera bag from ONA is literally bursting at the seams because of how many cameras I stuff into it. But it has lasted me over a decade and surprised me with it’s durability. I would highly recommend any bag from ONA. There are so many great, affordable camera bags out there and I’m so glad they’ve finally started making cuter ones. When I first got into photography, all of the camera bags were unbelievably ugly and definitely not meant for women. I’m thrilled that there are finally some great options out there. I also go for the biggest option available, but that’s only because I drag 5-10 cameras with me on every photo shoot. But I desperately wish I could be that photographer that just has a cute side satchel with one 35 mm camera and two lenses. Must be nice….

6. PROFESSIONAL DSLR CAMERA

If you’re on the hunt for a big gift and they are serious about starting a photography career, the Canon 5D Mark IV is the perfect gift. You can read my full review about the 5D Mark IV here. It’s my main camera that I use to photograph weddings, food photography, portraits, bands, landscapes, everything. When I first started my business, I bought the Canon 5D Mark II, an earlier version of the Mark IV. It carried my business for the first 5 years or so and I definitely attribute my early success to it’s capabilities. It made me a better photographer because the images were just simply, better! It kept me inspired for years. It traveled with me all over the world. It survived drops, spills, salty ocean mist, squished camera bags, and dozens of weddings. These things are STURDY. I’m equally as obsessed with my 5D Mark IV, especially because it’s that much better than the Mark II. It has dual-camera slots so I don’t have to worry about a faulty memory card at weddings. It has incredible low-light sensitivity, video modes, multiple-exposure options, and lens options. My all-time favorite lens is the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II L USM lens, but I also love the 50 mm f/1.2 L lens for portraits and travel, because it’s much lighter and smaller and takes stunning, cinematic images. You can read my full blog post about the 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens here, or the 50 mm f/1.2 lens here. If there’s someone in your life who has mentioned wanting to start a photography business but they’re afraid to dive in, the Canon 5D Mark IV has the potential to change their life and get them creating.

7. TRAVEL POWER BANK/PORTABLE CHARGER

Umm. These are an absolute necessity. I’m on my phone at all times, sending emails, editing photos, posting on social media. My phone dies quickly. If your photographer friend travels a lot, these can be an actual lifesaver. Particularly for adventurers, or photographers who love to camp in the woods or explore national parks and photograph landscapes, a battery pack like this can keep them safe and accessible at all times.

8. KEH CAMERA, B&H Photo, OR ADORAMA GIFT CARD

If you’re not quite sure what to get the photographer in your life, but they are interested in film photography or buying gently used photography gear, KEH Camera is the best. They have a huge inventory of vintage cameras and gently used modern cameras. Every camera is graded so you know exactly what condition you’ll be getting. Plus, for me, they’ve always been great with returns or helping you out if there’s something wrong with one of your vintage cameras. They know a lot about gear and it’s not unusual for vintage cameras to have a few weird quirks that you have to work through. Adorama is another great site if you’re looking for photography gear. Both of these are great options if you’re looking for gift cards that are photography-specific. That way, they can pick out exactly what they want!

9. M4 MACBOOK PRO LAPTOP

Another necessity for serious photographers. You simply can’t be a professional photographer without a fast computer with LOTS of storage. Well, I mean, you could, but your life might be difficult! I use my computer all day every day. I’m a huge supporter of Macbooks because they tend to last forever. I’ve somehow never had one die on me, but I take extremely good care of them and make sure to never drop them or spill anything on them. When I travel, I make sure to keep it safe in a protective laptop sleeve and I never leave it out in the cold or extreme heat. Currently, I use the M1 Macbook Pro, which I’ve had since 2020, but if you’re looking for the best, I’d recommend the latest 2024 Macbook Pro with the M4 Pro chip or the Macbook Pro with the M4 Max chip. Also, there’s nothing better than opening Apple packaging on Christmas morning. It’s so satisfying because their packaging is impeccable!

10. EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

While Smugmug is my favorite online storage, it’s also necessary to have desktop storage. When I’m working on a big project like a YouTube video or editing a wedding, I work from an external hard drive. If you get one that has a lot of space, like a Seagate Expansion 8TB hard drive, you don’t have to bog down the hard drive on your computer, which ultimately slows your computer down. I keep my hard drives extremely organized by year, month, and photo shoot. It’s super therapeutic for my OCD mind too. Every time I fill one up, I just get another one! And I then have my files automatically backed up to Backblaze, which is super affordable cloud storage. It’s a bit different than Smugmug, because Backblaze is automatic and runs in the background. It’s a mirror image of your hard drives and your computer (in case it crashes). Smugmug is more-so for client storage and uploading finalized images. Maybe it’s a bit of overkill on my end, but my biggest fear in life is losing all of my photos!

11. FUN NEW 35 MM FILM CAMERA

There is nothing more beautiful than a classic, vintage 35 mm camera. The Canon AE-1, Pentax K1000, and the Nikon FE2 and FE are a few of the more common options that fall in this category. I have the Nikon FE2 and it is, by far, the best 35 mm camera I own. The photos are gorgeous, crisp, and high-quality. I actually went into the camera store thinking I was going to buy the Pentax K1000, but the store associate helped me to realize the Nikon FE2 was better for me because of it’s ability to do multiple exposures easily. I’m so glad I listened to them because I’ve taken some incredible multiple exposures over the years! I absolutely love my Nikon FE2 and it’s one of those cameras that I simply can’t leave home without. You can read my blog post about the Nikon FE2 here or watch my YouTube video here! No camera collection is complete without a classic 35 mm camera. My sister has a Canon AE-1 and she loves it as much as I love my Nikon FE2! We even made a YouTube video about the Canon AE-1 when we were in Budapest together. :)

If they are into medium format, the Mamiya 645 AF and Pentax 645 are incredible options. I actually received the Mamiya 645 for Christmas one year and it was truly one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten! I eventually upgraded to the Contax 645, but I still miss my Mamiya 645 dearly. There was something special about that camera! You can watch my YouTube video about the Mamiya 645 here or read my full blog post about the Contax 645 here!

12. NEW CAMERA LENS

if they only have a zoom lens, buy them a fixed lens and vice versa! Two of my favorite lenses for my Canon 5D Mark IV are the 24-70 mm f/2.8 II L USM lens (zoom lens) and the 50 mm f/1.2 L lens (fixed lens). Depending on which camera they have, a 35mm, 50mm, or 85 mm lens is always a great option. 35 mm lenses are great for photographers with a photojournalistic style of photography and prefer candid, playful shots. A 50 mm lens is super versatile and great for portraits, travel photography, wedding photography, etc. The images are cinematic and dreamy, with a surreal quality that can really amp up your photography game. Images from a 50 mm lens can really impress your friends and family because the look isn’t as common as a 35mm style. 85 mm lenses are a bit more zoomed in and are ideal for portrait photographers and those who really love to capture the intimacy of the human face. I find 85mm lenses a bit more difficult to use in the real world because you have to back up from your subject quite a bit. It’s not great for landscapes or traveling because you can’t get that wider field of vision. Personally, my #1 go-to lens is the 24-70mm f/2.8 II L because it’s a zoom lens and covers the full range of 35 mm and 50 mm. It’s perfect for traveling because you can get wide shots of architecture but also beautiful portraits. I use the 24-70 as my main lens at weddings, always. I used to have the original version, but upgraded to the 24-70 mm f/2.8 II not too long ago and I love it so much. Zoom lenses are truly the best.

13. EPSON PERFECTION FILM SCANNER

This will save every photographer TONS of money in the long run. I’ve been scanning my own film for about 10 years and it’s actually become one of my favorite things to do on a weekend. I’d rather be at home scanning film than pretty much anything else. It’s so relaxing and exciting at the same time. There’s something special about handling the negatives yourself and finding out how your images turned out. I use archival photo gloves when handling the negatives so that I avoid getting any oils on the film, and I keep all of my negatives organized in binders. I use an Epson Perfection V750 Pro (you can find used versions on eBay) but there are a few newer models of the Epson Pro scanner, like the V850 Pro, that are similar. I scan both 35 mm and 120 film, as well as polaroids and old printed photographs from my childhood. I use it to scan documents and other things too, so it’s multi-purpose. It’s traveled with me across the country twice and it’s still kicking. It’s a hefty investment but I never have to pay for a photo lab to scan my film for me anymore, so I easily save $100 for every box of film I mail in. It’s worth it, trust me!

14. STUDIO LIGHTS / RING LIGHT

For someone who is just getting into photography and isn’t sure where to start when it comes to studio lighting, a ring light is a great one to start with. Sometimes, I’ll do an entire client shoot with just a ring light. It’s the perfect amount of light for polaroids if you’re shooting indoors, or for glamour shots. Ring lights are common for social media influencers to use when they’re doing videos because it really captures makeup details and makes everyone look good. It’s just flattering and is so much better than overhead lighting if you’re just in your room filming videos. The shape of the ring light creates a lovely eye sparkle too. When I’m doing a full-fledged fashion shoot, I usually use two strobe lights and then use a Neewer 19” ring light at my continuous lighting for my film cameras. I’m on my second Neewer ring light and I love it so much. I even fly with it when I’m traveling for work and it comes with a nice carrying case!

15. POLAROID CAMERA OR INSTAX CAMERA

I’m not sure how it happened but my Polaroid collection seemed to explode overnight. I have so many polaroid cameras. Whenever friends or family members find Polaroid cameras, I end up with them. But I’m not complaining! Polaroids cameras are the epitome of retro photography. And there’s something so gratifying about instant photography and watching the photograph develop in front of you. I mainly use a vintage Polaroid 600 camera because they are very simple and easy to use. They are basically just a point and shoot camera. It takes a little bit of time to understand the best kinds of lighting conditions for Polaroids, but I’ve learned to shoot in the shade when possible, not stand too close or too far away from my subject, and immediately put the Polaroid in my back pocket to develop. They are sensitive to cold temperatures and won’t develop correctly if they aren’t warm. And make sure not to touch the photograph while it’s developing or you’ll get fingerprints in the image! You can read more about shooting with Polaroid 600 cameras in my blog post here. And you can purchase Polaroid 600 film on Amazon or on Polaroid.com! If you feel unsure about buying a vintage camera, you should check out one the new cameras Polaroid is producing, like the Polaroid Now+ Generation 2. It has bluetooth capabilities for connecting for your phone for more creative control. It takes the classic 600 film or Polaroid’s newer film, i-Type.

I usually bring a Polaroid 600 and a Fujfilm Instax Square SQ10 to weddings because I like the Polaroid 600 for special, planned out shots and the SQ10 for all of those in between moments because it’s a digital/film hybrid. Instax film is much cheaper so I don’t feel as bad taking more photos. But with the Polaroid brand film, you’re usually in about $1.50-$2.00 per image so I make sure to take my time with those.

Similar to the Holga, Polaroid cameras are somewhat simple but do require a bit of a learning curve to end up with the best photos possible. But regardless, they are super fun to experiment with, look great on a shelf, are exciting to create with, and deserve to continue to be recognized for their magic.

16. GIFT CARD FOR TRAVEL OR HOTELS

As a photographer, I have to constantly find ways to keep myself inspired. I get bored shooting at the same venues and parks over and over again. I try to take a major trip out of the country at least once a year, and a few smaller trips to places I’ve never been in the US whenever I get a chance. We also like to visit the West Coast once a year since we have family and friends out there as well. I’ve somehow become the designated family trip planner because everyone knows I’m the best at finding good deals. Personally, I would love to receive a gift card to Hotels.com, AirBnb or just a Visa gift card!

And just a tip, if traveling for business, make sure to use a business credit card like the Chase Ink Business Card so you get 1.5% cash back! You can find out more here if you’re interested! I’m a bit of a finance freak so I’m always trying to earn points for my spending. :)

Yes. I’m a coupon-clipper kind of girl….

17. ADOBE LIGHTROOM OR PHOTOSHOP SUBSCRIPTION

I don’t know what I’d do without Lightroom. I use it every single day to edit every single photo. Photoshop and Lightroom go hand in hand - Lightroom is great for batch editing and getting it done quickly, while Photoshop is helpful for those photos that need a lot of detailed editing. Lightroom makes it super easy to transfer a file into Photoshop for more intensive editing, and then it will automatically ask if you’d like to save your changes to Lightroom. All of this to say, a Lightroom and/or Photoshop subscription is a great gift for a beginning photographer. Or if they already have Photoshop and Lightroom, it’s always appreciated when someone else covers our yearly subscription! :)

18. APPLE AIR TAGS

When I first heard about AirTags, I found them kind of creepy. I guess the idea of something tracking me and my stuff at all times freaked me out. But I received a pack of 4 for Christmas one year and they’re a game-changer. My husband and I each have them in our work bags so we know if we’ve ever left them behind somewhere. And while we’re traveling, we can track our suitcases and make sure they don’t get left behind somewhere. I joke with my husband that I want to put AirTags on everything we own. Plus, it’s fun to check my phone and watch our little AirTag emoji’s moving about if Chris is at work or my suitcase is being transferred through the airport. You can also get a keychain for the AirTag so you can attach it to your keys or bag. I’ll be getting one for my husband this year because he’s notorious for losing his keys…..

19. AMAZON.COM GIFT CARD

I couldn’t tell you how many times Amazon has saved me. There are times when I have a photo shoot in a few days and I realize I’m almost out of film or that I need some special camera battery and I need it yesterday. Amazon has some of the fastest shipping you can find for niche products like camera batteries, film, and other photography necessities. Also, it’s great if you aren’t sure what to get your photographer friend or family member because all of this photography jargon stresses you out. Believe me, Amazon has something that they want.

20. BUY THEIR WORK FROM THEIR WEBSITE!

Lastly, but most importantly, if your friend or family member who you’re shopping for is a photographer, videographer, or artist of any kind, the best gift you can give them for the holidays is to support their work! Buy their artwork through their website. Book them for a photo shoot. Order their prints. Buy their photo books. Artists are always hustling and never getting back everything they put into their work. It will make their day if you buy their artwork in any capacity. Believe me. Nothing makes me feel more fulfilled or excited than when I sell a photo print or receive a kind message about my photography. Or if you want to make my day, pick up a copy of my book, Temporary Beauty: A Memoir about Panic Disorder and Finding Purpose through Art and Meditation. Many artists and photographers will likely relate to some of the struggles and stories I share in my book.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I hope this list helps you come up with a few gift ideas for the photographer in your life. Or if you’re a photographer yourself, I hope this list reminds you to invest in your business and believe in yourself! I’ve been a full-time photographer since 2012 and it all started with my first Canon 5D Mark II. It truly only takes one amazing camera and one amazing artist to create a successful business.

If you found this post helpful or inspiring, I’d love it if you considered signing up for my Patreon! For as little as $1 a month, you’ll get early access to all of my YouTube videos, plus tons of photos that I don’t post anywhere else. The Best Websites to Buy Vintage Film Cameras and Used Photography Gear - The Most Reputable Camera Resale Sites

(By using the links and/or codes below it supports Myles Katherine Photography. We may get a small kick back by you doing so.)

Buying a used camera can be a terrifying concept, especially if it’s an expensive camera. But if you’re on the hunt for a specific vintage film camera, you don’t really have a choice but to find one online. Sure, you can hunt through thrift stores or wait around for one on facebook marketplace, but that can be time-consuming. Over the years, I’ve learned the best websites to find used gear without overpaying or ending up with a camera that just doesn’t work. Here are my favorite choices for buying used or vintage gear and a few reasons for why I like each one!

KEH CAMERA

The first site I’ll always recommend is KEH Camera. They have a rigorous grading system so you can decide how much you’re willing to pay versus the condition of the camera/lens. If you want gear that is in “excellent”, “excellent+”, or “like new” condition, you’re obviously going to pay more than one that’s in “good” or “fair” condition. They test their cameras before selling them and they have a great return policy. Any time I’ve had an issue with a camera, they’re always willing to work with me to figure out what’s going on. And if you’re going to get into the business of buying vintage cameras, it’s part of the game that sometimes you’ll run into weird, intermittent problems. They are super knowledgeable at KEH though and they have a huge collection of gear. If the specific camera you’re looking for isn’t in stock when you first take a look, I recommend waiting a week or two and checking back. They are always adding more listings and updating their inventory. Plus, they sell both film and digital cameras so even if you’re looking for an expensive digital Canon, Nikon, or Sony camera, you can save quite a lot of money by buying a gently used one. I hardly ever buy my gear new, so I’m used to taking the risk!

You can also sell or trade your own used gear to KEH camera! They make it super easy and they have a fool-proof process since they do it every single day. Can you tell I love KEH Camera? :)

Sometimes, for some reason, I forget that Etsy is an incredible place to search for vintage cameras. It’s kind of like walking into one of those giant antique stores filled with vendors and random collectibles. You can pretty much find just about any vintage camera you could possibly think of on Etsy. Not to mention, you are supporting small businesses and creators. It’s one of the biggest artist marketplaces you can find online and is reliable, easy to navigate, and an overall cute website to shop through. If you want to support small artists, this is the best place to find those rare vintage cameras on your list without having to scour through your local vintage stores. Not to mention, the prices are typically competitive because of the amount of shops on the site! Shop vintage cameras on Etsy here!

AMAZON

Amazon isn’t a website that you’d think would be a great option for vintage cameras, but it’s actually surprising how often I’ll find a rare used camera on there! Amazon has a great return policy and is typically super helpful if something is wrong with the product that you’ve purchased. Usually, if you find a used camera on Amazon it’s being sold by a small retailer, so just make sure to read their reviews! It’s also so nice to buy everything you need in one place. Amazon carries pretty much any battery, lens filter, camera bag or film you’d ever need so it’s kind of amazing. I’m often on the hunt for a strange battery for a vintage camera that none of my local stores carry, and I almost always can find it on Amazon. I actually just recently created my own Amazon storefront, so you can check out all of my personal camera and film recommendations here!

EBAY

A lot of people are intimidated by eBay, especially for more expensive gear. But I’ve bought some incredible cameras and lenses off of it over the years. The prices are extremely competitive because you’re usually just bidding against what other people are willing to pay for the same gear. So typically you won’t end up overpaying, which is always nice! However, if you’re buying a camera that is super trendy at the moment, you might be better off scouring thrift stores or trying KEH Camera for more consistent prices. I actually bought my Canon 5D Mark IV on eBay a few years ago though, which is my main camera and one of my more expensive cameras that I own! It was in nearly mint condition and has been working perfectly for years! The main thing with eBay is to make sure you’re buying from a reputable seller that has made lots of sales and has high ratings. Read the reviews and make sure you really analyze the photographs and description of the item you’re buying. I like to look at the other listings that the seller has, just to see if I get any weird vibes. In many cases, I’ll even send the seller a message and see how their communication is. You can usually tell right away if someone or something is scammy. Overall, eBay is pretty great with protecting both buyers and sellers, which is why I use it so often. I don’t even hesitate to buy cheaper cameras on eBay, because oftentimes, it’s the only website I can find certain rare vintage cameras on. I also sell gear on eBay and I’ve been using it for over a decade. It’s not for the faint of heart though, because there are often a LOT of options to choose from and it can be hard to weed out the good from the bad. But if you’re looking for something incredibly rare and vintage, eBay probably has it!

Adorama is sort of a blend of KEH Camera and Amazon. It sells both new and used gear at competitive prices, but also has lots of other products such as computers, electronics, and musical instruments. I find it to be a little more limited than KEH Camera when it comes to vintage cameras, but if KEH is out of stock with a certain product, every once in a while I’ll have some luck at Adorama. They are a fairly large company, so once again, they have a decent return policy and are helpful with returns. I like how easy their website is to navigate and I feel a little better purchasing things from them than from a big box retailer.

A FEW OTHER SITES TO CONSIDER

Of course, there are a ton of other sites that you can find new and used photography gear, these are just my personal favorites! I’ve also had luck buying gear on B&H, Poshmark, Mercari, and Polaroid.com (if you’re looking for specifically Polaroid cameras).

If you found this post helpful, I’d love it if you considered signing up for my Patreon! For as little as $1 a month, you’ll get early access to all of my YouTube videos, plus tons of photos that I don’t post anywhere else. Depending on which tier you choose, you could also receive seasonal prints and/or discounts! I always use all of the proceeds towards cameras, film & processing. Find out more here!
