Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM Lens Review - Is it Worth the Cost? - Why I Chose It Over the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z Lens

Here we go - the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM Lens. It took me WEEKS to decide between this lens and the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z Lens. They both had so many positive attributes. I desperately wanted a lens with a longer zoom capability for weddings, but the idea of having an f/2.0 aperture on a zoom lens, with the stunning portrait & bokeh capabilities of a prime lens, was also majorly enticing. After over a decade as my main lens, my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II L USM lens had finally kicked the bucket. It was time for an upgrade. I had an upcoming wedding on the books and needed to make a decision pronto so I could have it in time for the wedding. I even pulled my husband into the discussion and we spent days trying to decide what made the most sense for me and my style of photography. I wanted to share the three main reasons why I chose this lens over the highly desired Z lens so that, hopefully, I can help you in your decision!

  1. Beauty Over Functionality

The main question I kept asking myself was, is it more important to create beautiful images or have better functionality and reach at a high-paying event like a wedding? I’ve always wanted more zoom at weddings. I’ve been using the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II L USM lens for over a decade as my main lens at weddings. Every time I was standing in the aisle at a wedding and the couple was exchanging wedding rings, I dreamt of having just a little more reach to get close ups of their hands and rings. I imagined beautiful candid moments of guests across the room who didn’t realize I was taking their photograph. I wished I could zoom in on a mountain off in the distance or a butterfly on a flower and create images that only true nature photographers could achieve. But at the end of the day, I’ve always valued beauty and creativity over functionality. While this isn’t the case for every photographer, I realized it was for me. I wanted that extra background blur for my wedding portraits. I wanted just a bump of an upgrade to the low-light images I’d been creating for years. I wanted something BETTER than the images I’d been able to create with an f/2.8 aperture. I wanted to WOW my clients with dreamy, intimate portraits that were better than the norm. I knew this lens would give me that extra dose of magic I was looking for.

2. Low-light ABILITIES

I’ve spent over a decade getting along just fine with an f/2.8 aperture. It allowed me to capture images decently late into the evening at a wedding, but as the sun went down, I’d slowly make my way into using my Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM lens to finish up the evening until I’d eventually switch to using an on-camera flash. This set up worked great for years and years. But in post-editing, I’d have to touch up some of the noise and grain that made it’s way into those evening photos as I bumped up the ISO on my camera. I always prefer natural lighting over flash, so it’s super important to me to be able to take as many photos as possible until I absolutely have to switch to a flash. I knew with 100% certainty that the better low-light performance of this lens would come in handy for me. I just photographed my first wedding with it and it honestly removed some of the stress that I’d face as the sun went down. I was able to use this lens up until the late-night dancing began. The images are truly stunning. This is also my first RF lens, and I’ve been dreaming of trying one out for years. It’s true that the RF lenses have a beautiful, natural sharpness that is just more expensive-looking than the EF lenses.

3. A Prime Lens in a Zoom Body

This one was hard to deny. Who wouldn’t want the features of a prime lens in a zoom lens body?! The magic of zoom lenses is that they are versatile and can speed up your photography in a setting like a wedding where you’re capturing intimate, candid moments. You can use them for food photography, detail shots, events, portraits, fashion, everything. And I did. I used my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II L lens for everything. But if I was photographing headshots, or intimate wedding portraits, or wanting images that were more surreal, cinematic, and unique, I’d bring out one of my prime lenses like the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.2 L or the Canon EF 85 mm f/1.2 II L lens. It just made people look more beautiful, it made flowers look more magical, it made moments seem more special. But prime lenses can be limiting. You’re stuck with a single focal length and often have to work around your circumstances to create the image you’re looking for. It can be exhausting. It can slow you down. It can limit your ability to create a variety of images quickly. Once I understood the reasoning behind this lens, that Canon’s goal WAS to create a prime lens with zoom lens functionality, it pretty much sealed the deal for me. And what’s funny is that after shooting my first wedding with this lens, I realized I hardly touched my 50 mm f/1,2 lens at the wedding. This means that the lens was fulfilling two functions for me, a zoom lens AND a prime lens. It really is both of those things in one!

A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER

While this lens is incredible, I wanted to share a few of the things that almost turned me away from this lens. First of all, it’s HUGE. It’s HEAVY. It looks a little ridiculous on my tiny Canon EOS R body. If you think about prime lenses and how chunky they are, it is exactly like that, but with a zoom barrel added. It’s a CHUNK-MEISTER (the same nickname I’ve given to my new French bulldog puppy…). Weight is a huge factor to me when adding cameras and equipment to my collection. My camera was already so heavy and I’m not a large human so these professional DSLRs and giant lenses feel supersized on me. I compared the weights between the two lenses I was considering - 3.15 lb / 1430 g for the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM Lens and 2.9 lb / 1.3 kg for the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z Lens. Not a huge difference, but it was a factor in my consideration. After discussing with my husband though, we realized that with my history of bumping into walls and hitting my zoom lenses on corners constantly as they are hanging on my side, that the extra length of the 24-105mm lens might lead me to some issues. The 28-70mm lens is a bit more compact length-wise, so I knew that could mean a matter of life and death when it came to the lens and it’s lifespan with me. The 24-105mm lens has a length 7.8" while the 28-70mm lens is only 5.5". I’m often carrying two (or more!) cameras on me at any given time and I tend to get tangled. The extra length on the zoom lens would eventually start to bother me, and I knew that.

The other major thing to consider is that, because the 28-70mm lens is essentially a prime lens, it does NOT have image stabilization. My husband tried to argue this point with me for a while, because he’ll occasionally use my lenses for video. I know for some people this will be a deal-breaker. For me though, I’ve already been using my 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for over a decade without image stabilization and I’ve been able to create images that are beautiful and perfectly sharp. It’s really a matter of understanding when to bump up the ISO, when to speed up the shutter, and when to open up the aperture. Over the years, I’ve learned how to work around it, so I knew I wouldn’t miss what I’ve never had. However, I’m currently using the 28-70mm lens with my Canon EOS R, which is the very first mirrorless camera that Canon ever produced. It’s somewhat outdated and does not feature built-in image stabilization. My plan is to upgrade my EOS R next year to the Canon EOS R5 or R6 Mark II. My hope is that the built-in stabilization of those cameras will benefit me and my images, even if it’s just a tiny bit.

I was also a little bit bummed that I was losing 4mm of focal length by changing from the 24-70mm to 28-70mm. I love shooting super wide angle photos, especially at weddings where I’m trying to capture a full interior space. I use the full 24mm more often than I’d like to admit. My husband looked it up and it actually only accounts for about a foot of distance. So, hypothetically, if I just take one step back, I could account for the loss of focal length. However, at a wedding or in a tight space, I sometimes find myself up against the wall, unable to back up anymore, even with the 24mm lens. I’m still a little sad about it, but I don’t miss it when I’m outside or with plenty of space to back up. It’s only in those tight spaces that it would come in handy, and I don’t think it will happen as often as I think. In most situations, I will likely be able to take a step back.

And yes, obviously, it is expensive. It was a punch in the gut to purchase it. BUT! Here’s how I justified it. I used my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 II L lens for about 12 years as my main lens (you can read my full review of this lens on my blog here). It carried my business. It represented me and my work for YEARS. My husband and I did some quick math and determined that the cost of the lens was less than 1% of the entire amount of money it made me over 12 years. You can’t argue with that!

SO, WAS IT THE RIGHT CHOICE?

Ok, so I’m known for being one of the most indecisive people in the world. I’ll made a decision and then spend weeks convincing myself that it was the wrong one. But I’m being 100% honest when I say, I know with full certainty that I made the right choice for me. After trying this lens out for a few photo shoots and a wedding, I came away from the shoots inspired, excited, and surprised by the next level that this lens has brought my images to. I’ve spent the past few years feeling a little burnt out, and it’s amazing what new gear can do for a photographer. I can hardly even wait for my next photo shoot! The limitations I used to experience with my 24-70mm lens aren’t there anymore. I can now get that dreamy background blur that I’m always looking for, and that beautiful low-light sharpness and low grain that is so important for weddings and indoor event photography. And I don’t miss or wish for that extra zoom that the 24-105mm would have given me, simply because I just wouldn’t have used it that often. It didn’t make sense to have that extra zoom if I’d only use it for a handful of images every year. So, YES! For me, this was the right choice. I hope that this post has helped you in your journey to make a decision.

And of course, there were a few lower budget lenses that I was considering while hunting for a new lens. The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens was also a major contender, as was the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens. The problem with these was that I didn’t feel that they would greatly enhance my work, just because I was already using an f/2.8 zoom lens for so long. But they are both great options, and would save you some dough! And at the end of the day, the RF 24-105mm f/2.8 Z lens is going to make more sense for a lot of people, especially if you shoot a LOT of weddings, because that extra zoom length and image stabilization is hard to turn down. Even when I was purchasing my lens, the store associate said the Z lens was extremely popular. It wasn’t even in stock when I ordered the 28-70mm! Lomography LomoChrome Turquoise 35 mm ISO 100-400 Film Sample Photos in Porto, Portugal!

You guys know I love LomoChrome Purple film in both 35 mm and medium format), but in the past I had only tried the LomoChrome Turquoise in 120 format. I finally purchased a roll of 35 mm Turquoise film and took it with me to Portugal! I used my trusty Minolta Maxxum STsi (one of my favorite 35 mm travel cameras) and took photos on our all-day bus tour in the Douro Valley and all throughout Porto. I’m kind of obsessed with the results! I love any film that adds a surreal atmosphere to my images and this film definitely does that. Plus, the Minolta Maxxum STsi has a panorama setting, which is perfect for traveling and allows me to capture wide landscapes and unusual compositions. As you’ll see in the sample photos below, skin tones typically show up as blue, which is super unique and strange. If you’re looking for a film to push you out of your comfort zone and create an alien world, this is it! I love the way it looks with architecture, particularly. It’s very moody and cinematic, with quite a bit of grain, especially with multiple exposures. It also seemed to do decently well in low light situations. I probably wouldn’t use this film for a typical wedding or portrait client, but I would definitely consider it for a musician or artist who are looking for stand-out portraits.

I still think I might like the LomoChrome purple film better, but it’s always fun to try something new. One of the reasons I love Lomography so much is because of their fearlessness when it comes to creating new and unique films. I haven’t really found anything out there on the market that resembles the LomoChrome Purple or Turquoise films. They are truly unique.

Contax 645 Medium Format Film Camera Review with Sample Photos - Pros & Cons - Is it Worth the Price Tag?

When I first became obsessed with photography, I noticed that two of my favorite photographers (Wendy Laurel & Parker Fitzgerald) used a Contax 645 Medium Format Film Camera. It became a dream of mine to one day own that camera and create images that were as sharp and stunning as their photographs were. And I’m not the only one out there - this camera has developed quite a reputation for being one of the best medium format film cameras ever created. For years, I collected cheap. affordable film cameras to use alongside my more expensive digital camera. And while I loved my cheap, crappy film cameras (and still do!), I was never able to get that high-quality, professional look that the Contax 645 seemed to offer. I tried the Mamiya 645 for a few years, which I absolutely loved. It was, by far, the best film camera I had ever used and at a much more affordable price than the Contax 645. The images were beautiful. But I still wondered in the back of my mind what it would be like to finally own a Contax 645. I sold my Mamiya 645AF and decided it was time to upgrade. I’d been a professional full-time photographer for 7 or 8 years and finally felt that I deserved to own the camera I’d always dreamed of using.

When my Contax 645 arrived in the mail, I couldn’t believe it. I never thought I’d ever own one or that I’d ever allow myself to purchase one. But I convinced myself that I deserved it. I’d worked hard. And not to mention, I could write it off on my taxes! So, now that I’ve owned the Contax 645 for a handful of years now, was it worth the price tag? What are the pros & cons of the camera?

PROS & CONS OF THE CONTAX 645 MEDIUM FORMAT FILM CAMERA

PROS:

1. The Images are Everything I’d Hoped For

This camera is incredible. Sometimes, I can’t even tell them apart from my Canon 5d Mark IV. The photos are incredibly sharp and dynamic. The depth and clarity that I was always looking and hoping for with my crappy film cameras was finally there. The multiple exposures are beautiful, the low-light capabilities are great and I’m never disappointed in my photographs.

2. It’s Incredibly Easy to Use

For such an expensive, niche camera, it is surprisingly easy to use. I’m always on the lookout for cameras with Aperture-Priority - it’s my go-to setting for weddings and photo shoots. It’s essentially a partially automatic setting - you set the aperture you want and the camera does the rest. I prefer to shoot with very wide apertures to get that dreamy, surreal look to my images. When it comes down to it, I set the aperture and then I get to click away! It shouldn’t be so easy to use but it really is! You don’t even need to be a super professional photographer to use this camera. If you have a photographer friend who owns a Contax 645 and you’re interested in trying it out - don’t be afraid to ask and don’t be afraid that it’s going to be super complicated, because I promise, it’s not! There is also shutter-priority as well, which some photographers prefer over aperture-priority.

3. It Has a Multiple Exposure Setting

If you follow my work, you know how important this is to me. These days, I won’t even purchase a camera unless it has a multiple exposure option. Luckily, the Contax 645 has a lever on the side of the camera that you switch on. It stops the film from advancing so that you can take as many photos over top of each other as you’d like. The one thing I don’t like about it is that it can be easy to forget that I flipped the lever and I end up with triple or quadruple exposures before I realize that I need to flip it back. Luckily, the shutter makes a different sound when it’s using the multiple exposure function, so I’ve learned to pay attention to the sound.

4. It is Sturdy and Reliable

I’ve been using my Contax 645 for years with no issues, whatsoever. I take this camera to the beach pretty often too, and it has yet to run into any problems from the humidity or sand. Also, one of the photographers I mentioned earlier, Wendy Laurel, lives in Maui and uses two Contax 645s. She’s constantly around water and sand and still chooses to use the Contax 645 as her main camera. I’ve definitely bumped this camera a few times against doorframes and countertops too, but it hasn’t caused any issues. It feels durable when you’re holding it and you can tell that it was made to last. There’s a reason that people still love this camera and it’s because they’ve continued to last and function, even though they were released in the late 1990s. I will say that I do not use this camera as my main camera, so I don’t run this camera into the ground. I’m not entirely sure how it would fare in that case, but considering many photographers use it as their main camera, it seems they are quite reliable and professional in that regard.

5. The Zeiss Planar 80mm f/2.0 lens is Magical

I opted to go for the classic and highly regarded Contax Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm f/2.0 lens that this camera is known for. It’s incredible for portraits, has beautiful bokeh when using wide apertures and is super sharp when using more narrow apertures. If you’re a portrait photographer, you can’t get much better than this. It’s specifically great for wedding photography, especially if you’re looking for those beautiful, close-up portraits with dreamy background bokeh to amp up your portfolio. I have some wedding clients who specifically request for me to use this camera - typically, clients who know a thing or two about photography. This lens is EVERYTHING. To be completely honest, I wouldn’t consider myself to be a portrait photographer or consider portraits to be one of my strong suits, but this camera makes me feel like the most incredible portrait photographer in the world. I’ve definitely learned a lot from this camera, just because it shows me what portraits SHOULD look like and how important the lens is when it comes to your subject.

CONS:

1. It is Huge and Heavy

For many photographers who use the Contax 645, it’s their main camera. They don’t lug around 10 other cameras to all of their shoots like I do. Yes, I have a problem! I just enjoy a lot of different cameras because of the unique vibe that each one offers. However, when I do bring the Contax 645 with me, I never regret it. It always ends up taking my favorite photos from the day. It’s just that half of the time, I end up leaving it at home because it’s just SO gigantic and a pain to carry around. Unfortunately, this means that I don’t get as much use out of it as I’d like to. But I’m working on leaving more cameras at home, so that I can bring this one instead. And I haven’t quite made the transition to shooting entirely film. I still rely on my digital camera for taking the majority of my images. One day though, I plan to make the Contax 645 my main camera and use my digital camera as a back up. One day…

2. It’s Expensive

Yes, everyone knows that this camera is NOT cheap. There are much more expensive cameras out there though, for sure. For me, this camera falls right into the tip top of my range of comfort when it comes to spending. I’m definitely not at a place where I’d spend $30,000 on a camera. $3,000-4,000 though, if I know it’s going to benefit my work and my business, that feels more comfortable to me. It remains one of the most expensive purchases I’ve ever made for my business. But I know that I’d never have felt complete without it. It was more of a personal goal for myself, to own and use this camera. I finally felt that I’d made it to the level of my muse photographers. I finally realized that I was just as good as they were. I had accomplished an enormous goal and dream of mine. And that is priceless. Of course, if you aren’t quite ready to shell out thousands of dollars for a Contax 645, the Mamiya 645 is truly an amazing camera too that will get you that medium format look without the hefty price tag. The Pentax 645N is also a great, affordable option, and is actually the next camera on my list to try out! Not to mention, it’s also easier to find than the Contax 645 or Mamiya 645.

3. Repairs are also Expensive

While I’ve been lucky enough to not have to repair my Contax 645 yet, I know that it might happen one day. Because the camera is so large and heavy, it’s definitely more prone to drops and bumps. I’m extremely careful with mine though, which is funny because I’m not careful with any of my other cameras. But I want this one to last. I know that Nippon Photoclinic is authorized to repair them, but I also know they are quite expensive. The good news is that the Contax 645 is a very sturdy and reliable cameras in general. Just make sure you’re buying one from a reputable seller and that they have some sort of return or warranty for the first few months while you’re testing it out for issues.


SO, WOULD I BUY IT AGAIN?

Some people may think I’m crazy for owning this camera but it was a huge milestone for me, personally. I would absolutely buy it again. The images are 100% worth it if you’re looking for flawless, incredible medium format photographs. They amaze me every time I get a roll of film back. If you have the funds and it’s a camera you’ve always been dreaming of, you won’t regret it. Just please make sure you’re getting it from a trusted seller.

Also, if you’re thinking about taking the leap, it’s better to do it sooner rather than later. These cameras are only going to get older, more used and more expensive. There are still quite a few out there in great condition, so I’d take advantage of that!

WHERE DO I BUY IT?

I recommend KEH camera first and foremost. They are always great with returns and are extremely knowledgeable whenever I talk to them on the phone about any issues I’ve had with a camera. They buy, sell and trade used camera equipment and are my go-to when it comes to buying used gear. However, they don’t always have the gear you’re looking for just because gear is constantly going in and out. I recommend to keep checking back every week or two. As a secondary option, I recommend Etsy. I always love supporting small businesses, just make sure to read the reviews of the seller. Or as a third option, I recommend eBay. I’ve bought a LOT of gear off of eBay over the years. Again, just make sure to check the sellers reviews and percentage rating on their sales. Lastly, there is always Amazon. However, there aren’t always Contax 645’s available on Amazon just because it is a used camera and there aren’t a whole lot of them out there. But if you’re able to find one on there and trust the seller, go for it! Plus, Amazon returns tend to be pretty straightforward if you’re not happy with your purchase.
