The Instax Square SQ10 is one of my absolute favorite cameras to take with me on day trips. My husband, Chris, and I love to take trips out of the city to go on hikes or to visit the beach. Usually on these trips I’m trying NOT to work, but my obsession with photography means that I have to bring AT LEAST a camera or two… or three. :) This camera is perfect for traveling and allows you to create cute little keepsake snapshots from your day for scrapbooking or sticking on the fridge. I also love using this camera for weddings because I can take a ton of photos and then decide which ones to print later to give to my clients as keepsakes. These days, the SQ10 is difficult to find because Fujifilm has introduced newer models of this camera, like the Instax SQ40.

The Instax Square SQ10 is a “hybrid” camera - meaning it has features that both film and digital cameras are known for. It has a mini SD card that it stores the images on but they are only about 4 MP. Regardless, it’s always nice to have a backup of your images! The SQ10 is great if you are learning about double exposures as well, because it allows you to see the images overtop of each other on the digital screen, as you are taking it. I absolutely love double exposures (you can read more about them on my blog here). I’m always looking for the option to create double exposures with my cameras because it allows you to be a more creative photographer. Some people don’t particularly find them necessary or understand them, and that’s fine. But I love them!

There is also an Instax Square LINK Smartphone printer that Fujifilm has come out with somewhat recently and I really really want one! You can print images out straight from your phone and add things like cute borders and stickers to your photos. The printer uses Instax Square film too, just like the SQ10 and SQ40. The Instax Square photos are super cute and perfect for sharing with friends. My sister and I print photos out for each other all the time. It’s just so important to have physical copies of photos these days. It makes the images so much more special!

my favorite things about the Instax SQ10:

  1. It’s small and lightweight - I can easily fit it into a purse or backpack

  2. It has the ability to do double exposures (a MUST for me when buying a camera)

  3. It has fun filter choices like black and white, sepia, etc. that you can set before printing

  4. The colors it produces with the prints are actually really nice

  5. You can pick and choose which images to print so you don’t waste film

  6. The prints are bigger than the Instax Mini (which I always found to be a bit too small)

The Cons:

  1. The camera is slow in-between photos so it’s easy to “miss the moment”

  2. The digital images that are stored on the SD card are pretty low quality (about 4 MP) and would not be useful for anything other than maybe posting on Instagram - and even then, the photos would be somewhat pixelated if you looked closely

  3. It’s easy to accidentally print an image if you hit the switch on the side - if it’s in the “Auto” position, it will print right after you take the image

Overall, I highly recommend this camera for beginners who are interested in learning more about film photography, or if you just want a way to print cute keepsakes for your friends and family! It’s incredibly easy to use and has fun settings to experiment with. The main cons of this camera are just that the camera is slow when taking photos and that the digital versions of the image are low quality. I have a few samples below of the digital images from the SD card so you can see for yourself. They look rather sharp compared to the prints, but I wouldn’t zoom in too closely! It is nice that you have a digital backup of your photos though and can still post them to social media if you want to. I love this camera so much and have been using it for nearly a decade! The fact that I still take it with me to weddings after all these years tells you that it is actually a very useful camera and hasn’t lost out to other cameras yet!

Here are some of my favorite photos I’ve taken with the Instax Square SQ10 so far:

(The first images with the framing around them are scanned versions of the printed photos, the last 6 images are the digital version of the photos from the SD card. They actually don’t look too bad, but I wouldn’t blow them up much larger than 6x6 or so.)
